Harlem Renaissance poetry

Homework tonight is to find a public-domain poem you would like to interpret visually, and to post it to the blog. Many poets of the Harlem Renaissance published poems before 1923. Their work is among the most vibrant, contemporary-sounding and interesting English-language public-domain work we have to draw from. (Just be careful–you have to find the publication date–many HR poets *also* published well after ’23.)

Poet Gwendolyn Bennett.

Today’s poetry packet includes writing by Georgia Douglas Johnson, Gwendolyn Bennett, Jessie Redmon Fauset, and others.

Jessie Redmon Fauset.

For further reading, a great article about Johnson, Bennett, and Fauset, by Anthony Walton, called “Double-Bind: Three Women of the Harlem Renaissance,” is online here.
